The second graders enjoyed reading and listening to the first graders snowmen books! After reading the books, they left some comments for the first graders!

Sphero Target Practice 2016

Here are the Sphero tasks for you to complete today (in this order):

1. Finish 4 tries of Sphero Target Practice. Enter the data on your data sheet. Your data must be in inches – if you did feet and inches you will need to convert it to all inches! (If all 4 tries were zero, see Miss Bosch. You will need to try again at a harder distance to get some numbers to use!)  Here is the video if you forgot how to pair or set up the Sphero using the Drive app.

2. Find the total of your four tries (add) and put the total on your data sheet.

3. On your computer, click on Mission Control, then Dashboard. Use the calculator to find your average score.  To find the average take the (TOTAL) divided by (4). Write down the average – it may be a decimal.

4. Go to the front computer. Type in your first name, your total, and your average into the spreadsheet. It will build a graph of your scores as you enter the data. If the front computer is busy, go to the next step and come back when it isn’t busy.

5. When you are done, you may try either the Sphero app or the Drive and Draw app.

6. IF TIME: Put the Sphero and the measuring tape in the boxes on the back row.  Take the iPad back to your chairs (if people are still doing the target practice, you may sit on the floor) and with your partner/partners work on one of these Coding Apps:

Lightbot One Hour Coding (currently free) – a coding puzzle game with light up tiles

Cargo-Bot (currently free) – a coding puzzle game where you program a robot to move crates

Move the Turtle (currently $2.99) – simple coding using command blocks, similar to Logo or Scratch

Daisy the Dino (currently free) – easy drag and drop coding

Here is a link where you can purchase Sphero on Amazon. (We receive a small percentage of any purchases that helps buy technology that our students can use.)

2nd Grade Guppy Bowl eBook

guppybowlcover.update

I’m delighted to share that our second graders’ eBook, “The Guppy Bowl”, is now available for free download on 50 iTunes stores all over the world!

The “Guppy Bowl” was inspired by the Shark Tank TV show. Students were challenged to identify a problem that a second grader might have, then design and write about an invention (realistic or imaginary) that would solve the problem.

For iPhone, iPod, or Mac Computer: To download the files you will need to use an iPhone, iPod, or iPad with the free iBooks app installed on it (or into iBooks software on a Mac computer). Here is the link to download the book: The Guppy Bowl iTunes version

For other devices: If you do not have an iPhone, iPod, or iPad, here are some other ways you can possibly open the books by using the links below.  On a PC computer, try using the Chrome browser with the Readium app to download/view the file.  If you have an Android phone, you might be able to use the ePub Reader app, or another app for ePub files.  (I have not tested this on an Android, so I cannot verify that this will work.) iTunes Sceenshot

Our stories were made in computer lab using KidPix software. Miss Bosch printed and scanned all the stories and put them into the wonderful Book Creator app where each student made an audio recording of their story.

Book Creator is currently available for $4.99 US for iOS. There is a lite version which will let you try out the app and create one book. It also is available for Android and Windows.

We have been excited to share our books with family and friends, but we are hoping that we can connect with even a wider “Authentic Audience” around the world.  We would love for other students and classes to download our book.  If you do, could you please leave us a comment so we can know who has been reading our books!

If you have a class that has created an eBook, we would love to do a book exchange with you! Please leave a comment with a link to the book file or contact Miss Bosch via email at kbosch@southfieldchristian.org

Grooving to Dance Mat Typing

Our second grade students have been working on their keyboarding skills using Dance Mat Typing. They are doing a great job learning to use all their fingers to type! As the students work through the lessons, there are cute animated music videos to help the students learn the letters. I caught this cute moment with two students enjoying the song!

Here are our Keyboarding Learning Links for Dance Mat Typing and other keyboarding games.
