3D Crazy Characters – Second Grade eBook

IMG_1274

I’m excited to share that our second graders’ eBook, “3D Crazy Characters”, is now available for online viewing. The book features 3D characters designed with the Morphi app. The 3D files were printed on our Dremel 3D40 and 3D20 Ideabuilder printers using white filament which were colored with Sharpie markers. We used the Book Creator app to combine the 3D characters, background illustrations, stories, and audio narrations into one eBook. The book also includes information and videos on how we created the characters and eBook.

Click here to view the eBook 3D Crazy Characters online.

“3D Crazy Characters” also is available for free download on over 50 iTunes stores all over the world! If you have an iPhone, iPad, iPad, or Mac computer you can download the book onto your device to keep for viewing anywhere and to save as a memory for the future!

Notes for Educators:  Our backgrounds were made in computer lab using KidPix software. We used the Book Creator app to photograph the 3D characters on the backgrounds. Each student made an audio recording of their story using Book Creator. We are currently helping to beta test a new feature in Book Creator which allows you to publish your books online. This feature is so easy – simply click a button for publication. I am very excited for teachers to have an opportunity to have a user friendly way to share their students’ work with an online audience.

Book Creator is currently available for $4.99 US for iOS. There is a lite version which will let you try out the app and create one book. It also is available for Android and Windows.

We have been excited to share our books with family and friends, but we are hoping that we can connect with even a wider “Authentic Audience” around the world.  We would love for other students and classes to download our book.  If you do, could you please leave us a comment so we can know who has been reading our books!

If you have a class that has created an eBook, we would love to do a book exchange with you! Please leave a comment with a link to the book file or contact Miss Bosch via email at kbosch@southfieldchristian.org or on Twitter at @karlyb.

Disclosure: As a part of the Dremel 3D Idea Builder Ambassadors program, our school is receiving the use of the 3D40 printer for one year. If you are interested in learning more about the Dremel Idea Builder 3D40 printer, you may contact https://3dprinter.dremel.com/education-request.  I’d appreciate it if you noted Karen Bosch/this blog post as a referral in the comments/questions section at the bottom of the form.  Thanks!

3D Crazy Characters with Morphi app and the Dremel 3D40 Printer

FullSizeRender 13

Over the past few weeks our second graders have been working on our “Crazy Characters” project. Students used the Morphi Edu app to draw a crazy character, then simply tapped a button in the app to turn their character into 3D. The completed files were emailed to Miss Bosch to print on our 3D printers.

After the characters were printed on our Dremel 3040 and 3D20 printers, the students used Sharpie markers to color in the characters. They look amazing! Here’s a video showing the students working on their characters:

We are now using the Book Creator app to combine the characters with backgrounds, the story text, and audio recording of the story. We will be publishing our completed Crazy Character book to iTunes!

ABOUT THIS PROJECT:

Students used the Drawing Pad app to create their colorful illustrations. Drawing Pad is one of my favorite apps for students to use to create digital drawings. It currently is $1.99 on the US iTunes store.

After creating the pictures, students added them into the wonderful Book Creator app and then typed the text of each story. When the writing and illustrations were combined and completed, each student made an audio recording of their story using the recording tools in Book Creator.

I’m delighted to share that our second graders’ eBook, “The Guppy Bowl”, is now available for free download on 50 iTunes stores all over the world!

The “Guppy Bowl” was inspired by the Shark Tank TV show. Students were challenged to identify a problem that a second grader might have, then design and write about an invention (realistic or imaginary) that would solve the problem.

Drawing Pad Story Illustrations by 4th Grade

IMG_6288

Mrs. Swanson’s 4th graders have started working on making eBooks out of stories they have written. Miss Bosch visited their classes this week to help them get started with using the iPads to draw illustrations for their stories. Each student needs to create four illustrations using the Drawing Pad app to go along with their story. As you can see, their talents are really shining as they work on their drawings! Here are a few shots of the students at work. Click on each image to see a larger view!

Drawing Pad is one of my favorite drawing apps for elementary students. It has many creative features including richly textured drawing tools, stickers, and the ability to add text. It currently is $1.99 on the US iTunes store.

After the illustrations are done, students will be using the Book Creator app to create pages out of their story which will include their illustrations, text, and audio.
