Cranbrook Visit

Our first visit to Cranbrook as 5th graders was very exciting. We were able to experience the back collections with Dr. Stafford. He pulled various Native American artifacts for us to see. We put on our white gloves and became anthropologists!

Winter Counts

Posted on

In social studies we have learned  about various Native American tribes. Each tribe had its own way of keeping track of important events. The Lakota, also known as the Sioux, of the Great Plains recorded information on Winter Counts. The council would vote on the most important event of that year. The event would then be recorded on buffalo hide as a symbol. The symbols were read counter clock-wise. Here are a few examples of our 5th grade winter counts.

Math with Legos

At the conclusion of our math unit we spent some time exploring with Legos. Students were asked to find equivalent fractions using various sizes of Legos. It was fun to see the connection between math and everyday life!

Today we had the opportunity to explore DNA at Cranbrook. We mashed up strawberries and added chemicals to it. We saw the DNA strands under the microscope. It was messy and fun!

Cranbrook 12/9

Posted on

Today was a very exciting day at Cranbrook! We were able to do a museum tour first. We especially enjoyed the dinosaur exhibit and weather related interactive exhibits.

We were also able to spend some time flint knapping with Dr. Stafford. We learned how previous cultures would make weapons or tools using rocks and bones. We were able to try this for ourselves and bring home a few new souvenirs.
