Our first visit to Cranbrook as 5th graders was very exciting. We were able to experience the back collections with Dr. Stafford. He pulled various Native American artifacts for us to see. We put on our white gloves and became anthropologists!

Winter Counts
Posted onIn social studies we have learned about various Native American tribes. Each tribe had its own way of keeping track of important events. The Lakota, also known as the Sioux, of the Great Plains recorded information on Winter Counts. The council would vote on the most important event of that year. The event would then be recorded on buffalo hide as a symbol. The symbols were read counter clock-wise. Here are a few examples of our 5th grade winter counts.
